Meat and Bone Meal

Class 2 bone meal, a raw material for organic fertilizers.

The utilization of bone meal as a fertilizer is an agroeconomic method of recycling, where a secondary nutrient stream of the food system is recovered for crop production. Not only is bone meal a nutrient-rich fertilizer component, but it also increases the activity of micro-organisms in the soil and acts as a soil conditioner.

Class 2 bone meal typically contains 8–9% of nitrogen, 5–6% of phosphorus, 12–13% of calcium, and approximately 50% of organic compounds. It also contains micronutrients that are important to many plants.

The low C/N ratio (3–4) of bone meal is beneficial in terms of nitrogen mineralization and contributes to the release of nitrogen in the soil to be used by the plants. A portion of the nitrogen contained by the product is in the form of soluble ammonium that can be utilized quickly and helps start plant growth.

The fossil reserves of fertilizer phosphorus in the world are limited and returning the phosphorus within animal by-products back to the agricultural nutrient cycle is important. The phosphorus in bone meal is largely available as calcium phosphates, some of it is bound in organic form. With this composition, phosphorus remains usable in the soil for several years and its slower release for use by plants helps reduce the run-off of unused nutrients into surrounding soils and freshwater systems.
