Honkajoki Joined Finland’s Energy Efficiency “National Team” – Investments Support More Efficient and Low‑Emission Production

01.06.2026

We have joined the national Energy Efficiency Agreement for the years 2026–2035. Through this agreement, we commit to improving the energy efficiency of our operations by the end of 2035.

The agreement enables us to develop our energy efficiency in a long‑term, systematic way and to actively monitor progress toward our targets. At the same time, it helps reduce energy costs, lower emissions, and strengthen our competitiveness.

At Honkajoki, energy efficiency means using energy as effectively as possible in all operations — generating more value with less energy input. It is part of both our production processes and our operating culture, which emphasizes continuous improvement, data‑driven decision‑making, and resource efficiency.

Investments Supporting the Targets

Recent investments at Honkajoki also support the goals of the Energy Efficiency Agreement. The production facility commissioned in October — a €30 million investment — enables the manufacturing of products based on animal protein hydrolysates in Finland.

With the new facility, we can produce more and higher‑value end products from the same raw materials. At the same time, production becomes more energy‑efficient, as a growing share of raw materials can be processed using a more energy‑efficient method.

In addition, the new facility has been prepared for advanced heat‑recovery solutions, which will enable even more efficient energy use in the future.

Concrete Results from Energy Efficiency Work

Honkajoki has systematically improved energy efficiency across its operations. Key measures include:

  • developing steam systems and improving boiler efficiency
  • renewing automation systems to enhance process control
  • expanding the steam distribution network to reduce energy losses
  • investing in an electric boiler to increase energy system flexibility
  • improving compressed air systems and implementing targeted insulation measures

These actions have reduced energy losses, improved process efficiency, and delivered both cost savings and reduced environmental impacts.

Continuous Development and Future Measures

At Honkajoki, energy efficiency is a continuous and planned development effort. Energy consumption is monitored in key processes, and improvement areas are identified, for example, through energy audits.

In the coming years, energy efficiency will be further enhanced through:

  • optimizing raw material flow handling
  • developing energy storage solutions
  • increasing heat recovery
  • improving steam system control
  • strengthening measurement and monitoring systems

Energy efficiency is seen as a key means of supporting both business development and the achievement of climate targets.

What Is the Energy Efficiency Agreement?

Energy Efficiency Agreements are voluntary agreements between the Finnish government and various sectors. They guide industry, the energy and service sectors, real estate, and the public sector toward more efficient energy use. The upcoming agreement period is the fourth and covers the years 2026–2035.

These agreements are an established part of Finland’s energy policy and play an important role in the national climate and energy strategy, as well as in achieving the carbon‑neutrality target by 2035.

A wide range of sectors and organizations have committed to the Energy Efficiency Agreements.
